2012, the year of Home Improvement

I had the past four days off for the new year holiday and during that time I did some talking with the wife about possibly buying some land and building a new house. However, the reality of that dream quickly went to the way side when we looked at our current home. It’s a good house but is in need of some serious TLC.

We recently had new shingles put on and in a different color than the bland grey it used to have.

Our goal behind that was to help inspire us to make some changes in our house namely the color.

As you can see, the exterior paint is literally falling off. Before my wife and I got together to start our family, the house was hers and she was telling me that it hasn’t been painted in several years so our major project for 2012 is to paint the house and garage.

I’ve also been thinking of other projects that need to be done and the list started to get really long and overwhelming. I want to build new screens, a new screen door for both the front and back, get new gutters, and so on and that’s just the house! We also have the backyard, the garage, the rooms and more. Yea, you can see why the list was getting long.

So I decided to sit down this month and start evaluating each project and then start prioritizing them and developing a budget for each. What is realistic and what is not about each project. I would love new siding but financially that’s not realistic at this moment, however painting is. Adding solar panels isn’t realistic at this moment but upgrading the insulation in the attic is. Re-doing the kitchen isn’t realistic this year financially but maybe upgrading some fixtures or appliances are.

I’m also taking this opportunity to try two software applications to help with this task. (I’ll do a review of the one I choose in a later post.) I figured a piece of paper or using a word processing program or spreadsheet probably wouldn’t cut it and I didn’t want to invest a lot of time in creating the template.

With my software loaded up on my netbook I’m off to start the list and organization! It looks like it’s going to be a busy year for me!

What projects do you have lined up for 2012?
